May, Haitian Heritage Month

Celebrating the resilience, history, and contributions of a vibrant community

Haitian Heritage Month is a special opportunity to recognize the richness, diversity, and remarkable contributions of the Haitian community, which has contributed to Canada’s social, cultural, and economic fabric for decades.

In May 2026, KAYANOU pays tribute to the strength of a people who made freedom, dignity, and solidarity foundational pillars of their history. This commitment to preserving memory echoes the history of Haiti, the world’s first independent Black republic, founded in 1804.

A vibrant diaspora

Within the Haitian diaspora, this month shines a light on a rich culture, a living Creole language, a distinctive cuisine, and an essential role within Canada’s Francophone communities. KAYANOU invites the community to celebrate on May 18, a day when Haitians across Alberta proudly display their blue and red bicolour flag.

Recognizing the challenges

However, celebrating Haitian heritage also means acknowledging the ongoing challenges that still exist today. Racism toward people of African and Haitian descent remains a persistent reality in Canada. Systemic prejudice in employment, housing, and racial profiling continues to limit the full development and well-being of many individuals.

Dehumanizing discourse targeting Black communities, particularly in digital spaces, reminds us of the importance of acting with vigilance and responsibility.

KAYANOU, a catalyst for change

It is therefore essential to implement concrete strategies to combat anti-Black racism in all its forms. In this context, KAYANOU acts as a catalyst for change through research, intergenerational dialogue, the promotion of history, and the transmission of knowledge.

Haitian literary voices

Over the past few months, KAYANOU has strengthened its support for initiatives highlighting authors of Haitian origin, including Medjine Mathurin, Alice Prophète, Judith Juste, and Gary Papillon.

This fall, KAYANOU will also have the pleasure of welcoming Rodney Saint-Éloi, Montreal-based writer and founder of the publishing house Mémoire d’encrier, as part of the Alberta Intercultural Book Fair, which will take place at Campus Saint-Jean from October 8 to 10, 2026.

Three years and still moving forward

We are proud to support celebrations of Haitian Heritage Month, Flag Day, and youth initiatives, as well as the three-year anniversary of KAYANOU. These moments strongly reflect our roots within Alberta’s ethnocultural communities.
